What People Think This Hobby Is vs What It’s Actually Like

From the outside, this hobby looks serene.

A calm person. In a calm home. Surrounded by beautiful plants and glowing crystals. Soft sunlight. Gentle music. Possibly a linen shirt involved.

Very aesthetic. Very peaceful.

Now let’s discuss reality.

What people think:

You gently water your plants once a week.

Reality:

You rotate pots like you’re managing a solar panel farm trying to maximise light exposure.

You have moved the same plant to four different locations in two days because “I just feel like it preferred the other spot.”

What people think:

Crystals just sit there looking pretty.

Reality:

You regularly pick them up, turn them around, change their angle, and relocate them because the light hits better at 3:42pm from the left side of the room.

You have, at some point, rearranged an entire shelf for one new piece. Ok, maybe I have done that a few times....

What people think:

You buy a plant or crystal because you need it.

Reality:

You buy it because you made eye contact and now you’re emotionally involved.

What people think:

Rare plants and special crystals are expensive for no reason.

Reality:

You now understand growth rates, sourcing, care, time, patience, and why some pieces simply cannot be rushed into existence.

You’re not paying for an object. You’re paying for years.

What people think:

You have enough.

Reality:

You absolutely do not have enough.

There is always space for one more. You will find that space. You are very creative when required. I have absolutely no space, but I must have this and I WILL make space, somehow...

What people don’t see

They don’t see the time spent learning light, learning care, learning what makes a piece truly special. They don’t see the appreciation for detail that develops over time.

They just see “plants” and “rocks.”

You see form. Structure. Glow. Markings. Symmetry. Character.

And once you see those things, you can’t unsee them.

So yes — from the outside it looks like a calm, peaceful hobby.

And it is.

It’s just also slightly obsessive, mildly chaotic, and deeply satisfying in a way that’s hard to explain unless you’re already in it.

If any of this sounds familiar… welcome.
